Aging with(out) family: The new normal |
Economic development has substantially transformed family structures in higher-income countries, such as those in East Asia, leading to smaller average household sizes and a growing trend of older individuals living alone. These shifts pose significant challenges for societies traditionally reliant on familial care in later life stages. This lecture will examine two pieces of research: one on intergenerational living arrangements and one on older age suicide. Leveraging combined data from the East Asian Social Surveys and European Social Surveys, the study examines both living arrangements and life satisfaction among older adults in 4 Asian and 32 European countries. The goal of this research is to contribute to a wider debate on the linkage between well-being in older ages and shrinking family size under the Second Demographic Transition framework. At the extreme end of poor well-being, the issue of suicide among older adults is examined in a separate work. Using the death registries and censuses of South Korea from the past 20 years, the speaker unveils the characteristics of individuals who end their lives in older ages in a place sitting at a similar crossroad as Taiwan. It is a picture of a rapidly aging society experiencing the paradox of traditional Confucius family norms and the newly afforded freedom to retreat from family. This new phenomenon is likely to leave many elderly individuals without adequate support networks in the near future in the absence of policy intervention. The presentation underscores that successful aging encompasses physical health, psychological well-being, social connectivity, and financial security. Drawing on South Korea's experience, the speaker invites the audience to reflect on similar challenges faced by Taiwan. Advancing the global discourse on inclusive, resilient frameworks to support aging populations requires evidence-based approaches. |

How Things Travel: The Standardization of People and Places |
The content will be about the themes of Dr. Fan's research and how standardized interventions can miss things and how/why it is important to understand history, context and meaning, in particularly in the context of HIV. In the mid- to late-2000s, sexual activity became the primary route of HIV transmission in China. This shift highlighted the rising rates of HIV in men who have sex with men (MSM) and the speed at which HIV was transmitted. In response, the public health community, with the support of global health donors, made a concerted push to expand HIV testing in this population. At the same time, HIV testing became linked to performance-based incentives as part of an effort to improve “value for money” and ensure accountability for health spending. The performance-based financing model has long been championed by donors in the global north, and its export into China promised to both reduce HIV transmission and institutionalize more robust metrics for distributing health resources. In this presentation, I explore the impacts of these global health interventions and models and the assumptions that undergird their circulation. I ask: How do things like HIV testing and performance incentives travel across social and cultural contexts, and what do they do as they move? I argue that when such interventions are implemented without attention to social and political contexts, they risk standardizing people and places in ways that obscure critical complexities shaping public health outcomes. Instead, we must consider the histories and contexts in which HIV and other global public health challenges unfold, as well as the meanings people assign to them. |

Real-world data (RWD) has become popular in health research, offering timely, cost-effective, and generalizable insights compared to randomized controlled trials. Publicly available databases and electronic health records provide opportunities for generating robust evidence. This workshop introduces the principles and practical implementation of target trial emulation using TriNetX, a global analytics platform. Participants will learn why, when, and how to effectively perform target trial emulation. Participants will learn the fundamental concepts of comparative epidemiologic studies and engage in hands-on exercises to apply theoretical insights using the TriNetX platform. They will navigate the interface, identify relevant cohorts, define exposures and outcomes, and perform analyses emulating hypothetical trials. Structured examples and guided activities led by experienced instructors will enhance participants’ skills in protocol design, cohort selection, and data interpretation. |
