Economic development has substantially transformed family structures in higher-income countries, such as those in East Asia, leading to smaller average household sizes and a growing trend of older individuals living alone. These shifts pose significant challenges for societies traditionally reliant on familial care in later life stages. This lecture will examine two pieces of research: one on intergenerational living arrangements and one on older age suicide.

Leveraging combined data from the East Asian Social Surveys and European Social Surveys, the study examines both living arrangements and life satisfaction among older adults in 4 Asian and 32 European countries. The goal of this research is to contribute to a wider debate on the linkage between well-being in older ages and shrinking family size under the Second Demographic Transition framework.

At the extreme end of poor well-being, the issue of suicide among older adults is examined in a separate work. Using the death registries and censuses of South Korea from the past 20 years, the speaker unveils the characteristics of individuals who end their lives in older ages in a place sitting at a similar crossroad as Taiwan. It is a picture of a rapidly aging society experiencing the paradox of traditional Confucius family norms and the newly afforded freedom to retreat from family. This new phenomenon is likely to leave many elderly individuals without adequate support networks in the near future in the absence of policy intervention.

The presentation underscores that successful aging encompasses physical health, psychological well-being, social connectivity, and financial security. Drawing on South Korea's experience, the speaker invites the audience to reflect on similar challenges faced by Taiwan. Advancing the global discourse on inclusive, resilient frameworks to support aging populations requires evidence-based approaches.
